LONG BEACH - A total team effort is what Long Beach City College women's volleyball coach Suzi Witmer was looking for Wednesday, and that's exactly what she got.

The Vikings dominated every facet of their nonconference match with visiting Ventura, controlling both the net and the service line in a 25-14, 25-10, 25-15 triumph in their home opener.

Sophomore Celina Yandall led Long Beach with 11 kills, Danielle Tuitasi and Kaitlyn McMahon each had nine and setter Sami Uepa had 35 assists as the Vikings improved their record to 2-0.

"Our passing was wonderful," said Witmer, just moments after sharing celebratory high-fives with her players as they warmed down. "We've got great offensive hitters, and our passing helped get them the ball.

"It was a total team effort."

Defensively, Long Beach held the Pirates (0-2) in check, forcing 23 errors in 90 hitting attempts.

With what Witmer called "smart serving," the Vikings rarely let Ventura get into any offensive rhythm, and the blockers controlled the net, recording eight block assists and one solo block by Yandall. Defensive specialist Gabriela Gonzalez added 19 digs and Uepa had 10.

"(Ventura) couldn't adjust to our block," Witmer said.

Melissa Yepez came off the bench to provide three aces and Lauren Moreno had two. Long Beach finished with as many aces (seven) as service errors.

"We were hitting our areas perfectly," said Witmer, "doing exactly

what (the coaching staff) wanted them to do."

LBCC jumped to early leads in each set, and trailed just once in the entire match, at 2-1 in the third.

The Vikings led by as many as 12 points in the first set and were tied only once (1-1), following a rotation violation. In the second, Long Beach scored the final six points. Two came on Ventura net violations and the final point was courtesy of McMahon from a Uepa assist.

The Pirates played their best in the third set, pulling within 12-9. The Vikings, however, closed out the match with a flurry, and officially ended the night on reserve Jasmine Caldwell's third kill.

Gemma Stoll and Candace Sakuda led Ventura with two kills apiece.

Long Beach travels to the San Diego Mesa Tournament next weekend and will host Mesa in a nonconference match Sept.21.
