Al Qaeda calls on Iraqi Sunni protesters to take up arms

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Al Qaeda's Iraqi wing on Thursday urged Sunni protesters to take up arms against Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, adding fuel to growing sectarian unrest in the world's fastest-growing oil exporter.

Al Qaeda's local affiliate Islamic State of Iraq said "peace and patience" were useless for dealing with the Shi'ite-led government they see as oppressors of Iraq's Sunni minority.

"You have two options, not three: either kneel before the apostates, though that will be impossible, or to take up arms," Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, the group's spokesman said in an audio statement posted on a jihadist website.

Thousands of Sunni Muslims have rallied mostly in the western province of Anbar since December over frustrations they have been sidelined since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Maliki says he will address legitimate demands, but warned against militants hijacking protests, heightening concern the OPEC nation risks worsening Shi'ite against Sunni confrontation.

Weakened by war with U.S. and Iraqi troops, Islamic State of Iraq last year vowed to retake ground lost to the government.

With Sunni Islamist militants flowing into neighbouring Syria to battle President Bashar al-Assad, security experts say al Qaeda is gaining funds, recruits and morale on both sides of the border, after years of losses.

Assad, whose ruling minority sect is a distant offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, is closely allied to Iran. The mostly Sunni rebel battle against his rule has started to threaten to upset Iraq's own fragile sectarian and ethnic balance.

GROWING DEMANDS

Sunni leaders say they want changes to an anti-terrorism law and to a law aimed at weeding out former members of Saddam's outlawed Baath party, which they believe have been used to unfairly target their community.

In a report released on Thursday, Human Rights Watch said Iraq's authorities used "draconian" measures against opposition leaders, detainees and demonstrators with security forces carrying out arbitrary arrests and abusive interrogations.

Seeking to defuse the crisis, the government has raised salaries for Sunni tribal militia who once fought al Qaeda, reviewed cases of prisoners and halted arrests made based on information from secret informers.

But Sunni ranks are split and hardliners and Sunni Islamists are calling for Maliki to step down. Some are pushing for an autonomous Sunni Muslim region inside Iraq.

Tensions exploded into clashes in Falluja last week when soldiers killed five people. Insurgents tied to al Qaeda have stepped up attacks trying to spark sectarian confrontation.

Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing also in Falluja city earlier this month that killed a Sunni lawmaker.

Violence has eased since the 2006-2007 sectarian bloodbath, but al Qaeda and Sunni Islamists have carried out at least one big attack each month since the last U.S. troops left last year.

Melbourne scientists have discovered how female steroid hormones can make dramatic changes to the genetic material in breast cells, changes that could potentially lead to breast cancer.

Researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, Australia, have identified how pregnancy hormones send signals to critical molecules on the DNA to make changes in the epigenome. The epigenome is a series of chemical tags that modify DNA, controlling which genes are switched on and off.

Professor Jane Visvader, Dr Bhupinder Pal, Professor Geoff Lindeman and colleagues from the institute's breast cancer laboratory led the study, which was published today in Cell Reports.

Professor Visvader said the researchers had created a roadmap of the epigenomes of different breast cell types. In collaboration with Professor Gordon Smyth and colleagues from the institute's Bioinformatics division they determined how the epigenomes changed in response to ovarian hormones such as progesterone.

"We found the epigenome was very sensitive to hormonal regulation," Professor Visvader said. "This reveals another way in which female hormones can influence breast cancer risk - by altering the epigenome through modifications in DNA tags."

The epigenome is where the DNA and the environment intersect, communicating signals from the outside world to the DNA. The epigenome doesn't alter the genetic code, but is a layer of proteins that sits 'on top' of the DNA and provides instructions on whether DNA should be read and 'switched on' to produce proteins.

The research team found that pregnancy hormones activate a molecule called EZH2, which is an important modifier of the epigenome. "We found that hormones including progesterone activate EZH2 to modify the epigenome, leading to global changes in the expression of a huge number of genes," Professor Visvader said.

"In normal tissue, EZH2 is essential for the development of breast tissue including ducts and milk-producing cells, and for maintaining the activity of breast stem cells and their daughter progenitor cells. However, life-long exposure to hormones could lead to breast tumour initiation through increased levels of EZH2 and the changes that it orchestrates in the epigenome."

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in women, accounting for almost 30 per cent of all cancers affecting women. One in nine women in Australia will develop breast cancer by the age of 85.

High levels of EZH2 are a marker of poor prognosis in breast cancer and have been frequently observed in basal-like breast cancers, the most aggressive types of breast cancer. "The link between progesterone, EZH2 and the epigenome, could be crucially important in the very early stages of breast cancer development," Professor Visvader said.

Professor Lindeman said there were decades of evidence linking hormone exposure with breast cancer, but the hormones' influence on the epigenome was not known. "Our discovery points to a role for hormone-induced changes in the epigenome in the early stages of breast cancer initiation, and could lead to new therapeutics for treating breast cancer," Professor Lindeman said. "Inhibitors against EZH2 are being developed by others, but it will be several years before we know the outcome of these on cancer."

President Obama unveils his immigration plan

This transcript is automatically generated

Yeah thanks so -- Bill O'Reilly in the unresolved problem segment tonight Americans who follow the news and that's about 50% of us.

Well understand that a new immigration law is in play.

There are two contrasting views of the law one put forth by President Obama today in Nevada.

The other proposed by Florida senator Marco Rubio here is where the two plans are for the most.

Rubio and some in the senate want border security tied into any new bill -- Obama does not.

Also the senators want -- probation period for illegal aliens in case.

They commit a crime or something the president does not he wants to give illegal aliens legal status right away not -- citizens.

But his work.

Joining us -- watching Fox News analyst Charles program -- do I have it right in your opinion.

What I think appearances.

He had spent I think.

This senate goes a little bit softer the proposed senate bill.

There's a little softer than advertised.

It is true.

That -- have to get certification.

That the border is closed his enforced.

-- the border security is working.

Before you can go on to get a green card and go to citizenship.

However what most people have not noticed.

Is that in the senate bill the bipartisan bill.

There is essentially.

Instant legalization that day -- Everybody get what you -- probationary.

I status.

But look.

What that means is that everybody was here comes out of the shadows.

Registers with the government tells them where they work where they live.

It is utterly inconceivable.

That that is ever going to be rolled back.

Because.

A commission -- says -- border isn't sufficiently.

Spokane before and I think everybody knows it's it's more of a symbolic gesture than anything else but senator rubio is on -- program recently and he said look.

You gotta do this because.

You know it's a chaotic situation but as far as citizenship is concerned.

There is -- going to be that unless the illegal oil man who is now going to be able work in this country -- I do believe this past.

Dole is what rubio has to be back to the line and applies like everybody else and it's gonna take decades -- get citizenship.

Does that matter.

Well what it means -- They are going to have to wait years and years for citizenship.

But they're not going -- back of the same line.

That people waiting in Hong Kong.

And in Brazil are -- Because they don't get to get into the country to settle in the country to work in our country.

For years they have to wait to admit I don't illegal aliens are rewarded for their already here here what look I'm not against his -- been for amnesty.

For over seven years but the thing I've tried to insist on.

And I think has to be the core.

Is that you have to close the border first -- because if the American people believe.

That these eleven million are the last -- to come in they will be completely generous as we've always been to legalize them but if they think.

-- gonna get swindle the way we did in 1986 when Reagan signed the same thing and gave amnesty with a promise of enforcement.

We're gonna end up in 1020 years -- another ten.

to -- as Edward try and that's what we're trying to avoid do you believe the boy look all the stats on the border are favorable to what they -- And part of that is a recession aren't as many jobs for people to have that -- that you know the lower.

The lower Echelon.

I don't know I mean I mean -- in -- while I'm gonna go to Arizona couple weeks -- look -- do you believe that that they're making big progress on the southern border.

Absolutely not this is a function of the recession.

People come here to work if there's no work the American economy.

In fact many Mexicans and other Latin Americans who've come across the southern border some of them have gone back because -- could -- cynical right.

So that's the explanation.

I think you can't rely on this temporary low.

And say well the borders Columbus -- spent millions of dollars Charles on -- technology in the border fence and beefing up everything you tell me and I don't work.

Absolutely and not only me.

The secretary of Homeland Security.

This talk about high tech -- is -- in 06.

That congress passed a lot of money to build a high tech sense.

Across the border in two years ago.

Janet Napolitano.

Cancel the project she spent a billion dollars to do 53 miles of it and realized it doesn't work.

What's this nonsense about high tech -- you know but drones and all that.

What about a regular science and don't tell me it doesn't work the Israelis constructed one.

Across the west bank and that terror attacks.

Are down by 99%.

-- you believe I said -- done what they should do down there and that has to be done.

Before the other -- can play if you hear the word sentence.

You will know that they are serious if you hear the -- high tech.

You know they are not it's very simple sentences -- work for 5000 years.

And they work everywhere right why don't we build one and then legalize people.

Who are here illegally Charles cranberry body -- always.

North Korea's Kim dashes early hope but U.S. still seeks change: Clinton

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea's missile tests and menacing rhetoric have disappointed U.S. expectations that young leader Kim Jong-un would be different than his father but Washington still hopes to persuade Pyongyang to change course, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday.

"With a new young leader we all expected something different," Clinton said in a town hall-style session put together by the State Department and broadcast worldwide. "We expected him to focus on improving the lives of the North Korea people, not just the elite, but everyone.

"Instead he has engaged in very provocative rhetoric and behavior," she said of Kim, who took over his impoverished, isolated Northeast Asian nation when his father, Kim Jong-il, died in December 2011.

Last week the North declared a boycott of all dialogue aimed at ending its nuclear program and vowed to conduct more rocket and nuclear tests with its "sworn enemy" the United States as the target.

The serial diatribes in North Korea's state media, which also threatened U.S. ally South Korea with war, came after the U.N. Security Council censured it for a long-range missile launch in December and added to longstanding sanctions.

Many analysts say North Korea is preparing for what would be its third nuclear weapons test, with Kim Jong-un following his father's pattern of drawing international opprobrium with a missile test and then responding to world criticism with another missile or nuclear test.

Clinton, in one of her final interviews before leaving office, said the United States, its allies Japan and South Korea and regional powers China and now "have to work closely together to try to change the behavior of the North Korean regime."

"We still hope there is a way to convince the North Korean regime not to pursue this path," she said.

Noting that the young Kim was partly educated in Switzerland and might seek to make changes to the regime his grandfather founded in 1948, she urged him to "be the kind of leader who will be remembered for the millennia as the person who moved North Korea on a path of reform."

(AP) ? A soldier who lost all four limbs in a roadside bombing in Iraq says he's looking forward to driving and swimming with new arms after undergoing a double-arm transplant.

"I just want to get the most out of these arms, and just as goals come up, knock them down and take it absolutely as far as I can," Brendan Marrocco said Tuesday.

The 26-year-old New Yorker spoke at a news conference at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was joined by surgeons who performed the operation.

After he was wounded, Marrocco said, he felt fine using prosthetic legs, but he hated not having arms.

"You talk with your hands, you do everything with your hands, basically, and when you don't have that, you're kind of lost for a while," he said.

Marrocco said his chief desire is to drive the black Dodge Charger that's been sitting in his garage for three years.

"I used to love to drive," he said. "I'm really looking forward to just getting back to that, and just becoming an athlete again."

Although he doesn't expect to excel at soccer, his favorite sport, Marrocco said he'd like to swim and compete in a marathon using a handcycle.

Marrocco joked that military service members sometimes regard themselves as poorly paid professional athletes. His good humor and optimism are among the qualities doctors cited as signs he will recover much of his arm and hand use in two to three years.

"He's a young man with a tremendous amount of hope, and he's stubborn ? stubborn in a good way," said Dr. Jaimie Shores, the hospital's clinical director of hand transplantation. "I think the sky's the limit."

Shores said Marrocco has already been trying to use his hands, although he lacks feeling in the fingers, and he's eager to do more as the slow-growing nerves and muscles mend.

"I suspect that he will be using his hands for just about everything as we let him start trying to do more and more. Right now, we're the ones really kind of holding him back at this point," Shores said.

The procedure was only the seventh double-hand or double-arm transplant ever done in the United States.

The infantryman was injured by a roadside bomb in 2009. He is the first soldier to survive losing all four limbs in the Iraq War.

Marrocco also received bone marrow from the same donor to minimize the medicine needed to prevent rejection. He said he didn't know much about the donor but "I'm humbled by their gift."

The 13-hour operation on Dec. 18 was led by Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, plastic surgery chief at Hopkins.

Marrocco was being released from the hospital Tuesday but will receive intensive therapy for two years at Hopkins and then at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda.

After a major surgery, human nerves regenerate at a rate of an inch per month, Lee said.

"The progress will be slow, but the outcome will be rewarding," he added.

Mali to receive $18.4 million loan from IMF

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mali, the strife-torn West African nation, has been approved to receive an $18.4 million loan from the International Monetary Fund to help stabilize its economy over the next 12 months, the IMF said on Monday.

The Fund said approval of the loan, under its Rapid Credit Facility, will not fulfill all the government's needs but should send a signal that Mali's economy is on the right path, prompting other donors to offer financial assistance.

The IMF first announced in November that it had agreed on a loan with Mali, subject to board approval.

"The disbursement ... is designed to help Mali deal with urgent balance of payments need and catalyze financial support from Mali's international partners, which is critical to Mali's economic recovery," the IMF said in a statement.

Other donors that often support Mali include the World Bank, the African Development Bank and France, the IMF said.

The facility is a quick-disbursing fund for poor countries recovering from natural disasters or conflict.

The United States and the European Union are backing a French-led intervention in Mali against al Qaeda-allied militants they fear could use the West African state's desert north as a springboard for international attacks.

"Mali's economy is traversing a particularly difficult period as a result of the 2011 drought, insurgent attacks in the north of the country and political instability in the wake of the military coup in March 2012," the IMF said.

However, the IMF's mission chief to the West African country, Christian Josz, said Mali is making an effort to improve its economy, which should expand by 4.5 percent this year after contracting in 2012, especially if the weather is favorable to crops.

"But of course there are many uncertainties," he told reporters on Monday.

Mali received a $46 million IMF loan in 2011 but canceled it after soldiers toppled the president in March 2012 and al Qaeda-linked militants seized northern cities.

A leading producer of gold and cotton, Mali faces a budget shortfall, especially since the European Union and the United States suspended aid after the coup.

For 2013, Mali faces a budget shortfall of $110 million, but it will freeze spending unless it is able to plug the gap with development aid from donors, the IMF said.

China carries out anti-missile test

BEIJING (Reuters) - China tested emerging military technology aimed at destroying missiles in mid-air after an initial test in 2010, state media said on Sunday, in a move that will unnerve its neighbors.

A brief report by the official Xinhua news agency said the military carried out a "land-based mid-course missile interception test within its territory".

"The test has reached the pre-set goal," the report quoted an unnamed Defence Ministry official as saying. "The test is defensive in nature and targets no other country."

It did not specify whether any missile or object had been destroyed in the test.

"Although no other detailed information about the test was released from the military authorities, weapon system experts said such a test could build shield for China's air defenses by intercepting incoming warheads such as ballistic missiles in space," the report added.

People's Liberation Army officials and documents in recent years have said developing anti-missile technology is one focus of defense spending, which has grown by double-digits over many years.

The latest flexing of China's maturing military hardware comes as Beijing is involved in increasingly bitter territorial disputes in the East China Sea with Japan and in the South China Sea with several Southeast Asian nations.

Beijing says its military spending is for defensive purposes and the modernization of outdated forces.

Rugby team poised to return to action | Kaleidoscope - UAB Campus ...

Posted on Jan 26, 2013 in Sports

Seems as though there is a club at UAB for just about everything?including rugby. For those of you who do not know, rugby is a sport very similar to football that has been played since the 5th century. It is very popular in European countries, especially in the United Kingdom, but has also gained popularity and recognition throughout the entire world, including the United States.

Rugby popularity is growing world wide. It will be one of the sports added to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. MCTCampus

Rugby popularity is growing world wide. It will be one of the sports added to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. MCTCampus

Rugby has many rules and loopholes for the rules, and it is sometimes referred to as ?football without padding.? Rugby was banned in England for a while due to its violence and subsequent injuries. It sounds pretty intense, and now it?s offered right on our campus!

The rugby football club is just one of the many clubs on campus that is considered a club sport. Members in the club can meet-up to engage in athletic competitions, and even compete against other schools.

This spring, the club has 19 players on its roster, one of the largest numbers this club has seen in all its time at UAB.
They have big goals for this season as well, and have already begun practicing for this year. They practice three times a week: one practice is held on campus, and the other two are held at Ramsay Park, where they collaborate with The Vulcans, Birmingham?s men rugby club.

The season starts soon for the boys. As part of the Dixie Rugby League Collegiate Rugby Conference, they are faced teams from schools like Belmont, Bryan College and Sewanee. They will play Free-Hardman on January 26 at home. Then they will play Harding on February 2 in an away game. They will play against the University of North Alabama on February 9 at home. After these games, they will compete in a few friendly matches throughout the months of March and April. So far, they have just enjoyed a closer working relationship with the campus recreation center and the USGA.

Last spring, the UAB rugby club qualified for playoffs but had to forfeit this opportunity due to the loss of several players. However, the team has big goals to achieve in 2013, including winning and qualifying for the playoffs again this year. They hope to proceed further in the playoffs than just the preliminary competition. Pablo Sierra, an experienced player on the team, said he hoped that the club could ?grow as a team and as a UAB club organization by gaining new members and becoming a bigger part of the UAB community.?

Right now the club is looking to recruit more members. They need people who are tough emotionally and physically and who are willing to work to improve their strengths and strategies, willing to work as a team, and desire healthy competition in an athletic atmosphere. If this sounds interesting to you, then join this club! It is open to both males and females and you just need to attend a practice or meeting to show your interest.

Anonymous hijacks federal website to avenge activist's death

10 hrs.

WASHINGTON???The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide. The FBI is investigating.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch (http://www.ussc.gov), was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online, and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

The FBI's Richard McFeely, executive assistant director of the agency's?Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch, said in a statement that "we were aware as soon as it happened and are handling it as a criminal investigation. We are always concerned when someone illegally accesses another person's or government agency's network."

Hours after the hijacking, pages on the USSC.gov website were available only sporadically.

Immune cell suicide alarm helps destroy escaping bacteria

Friday, January 25, 2013

Cells in the immune system called macrophages normally engulf and kill intruding bacteria, holding them inside a membrane-bound bag called a vacuole, where they kill and digest them.

Some bacteria thwart this effort by ripping the bag open and then escaping into the macrophage's nutrient-rich cytosol compartment, where they divide and could eventually go on to invade other cells.

But research from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine shows that macrophages have a suicide alarm system, a signaling pathway to detect this escape into the cytosol. The pathway activates an enzyme, called caspase-11, that triggers a program in the macrophage to destroy itself.

"It's almost like a thief sneaking into the house not knowing an alarm will go off to knock down the walls and expose him to capture by the police," says study senior and corresponding author Edward Miao, PhD, assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at UNC. "In the macrophage, this cell death, called pyroptosis, expels the bacterium from the cell, exposing it to other immune defense mechanisms."

A report of the research appears online in the journal Science on Thursday January 24, 2013.

Miao, also a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, says the new findings show that having this detection pathway protects mice from lethal infection with the type of vacuole-escaping Burkholderia species: B. thailandensis and B. pseudomallei.

Both are close relatives. But they differ in lethality. B. pseudomallei is potentially a biological weapon. Used in a spray, it could potentially infect people via aerosol route, causing sickness and death. Moreover, it also could fall into a latent phase, "essentially turning into a 'sleeper' inside the lungs and hiding there for decades," Miao explains. In contrast, B. thailandensis, which shares many properties with its species counterpart, is not normally able to cause any disease or infection

These environmental bacteria are ubiquitous throughout S.E. Asia, and were it not for the caspase-11 pathway defense system, that part of the world could be uninhabitable, Miao points out.

This grim possibility clearly emerged in the study. Mice that lack the caspase-11 detection pathway succumb to infection not only by B. pseudomallei, but also to the normally benign B. thailandensis. "Thus caspase-11 is critical for surviving exposure to ubiquitous environmental pathogens," the authors conclude.

Miao points to research elsewhere showing that the pathway's abnormal activation in people with septic shock, overwhelming bacterial infection of the blood, is associated with death. "We discovered what the pathway is supposed to do, which may help find ways to tone it down in people with that critical condition.

As to bioterrorism, the researcher says it may be possible to use certain drugs already on the market that safely induce the caspase-11 pathway. "Since this pathway requires pre-stimulation with interferon cytokines, it is conceivable that pre-treating people with interferon drugs could ameliorate a bioterror incident. This could be quite important in the case of Burkholderia, since these bacteria are naturally resistant to numerous antibiotics.

"But first we have to find out if they would work in animal models, and consider the logistics of interferon stockpiling, which are currently cost prohibitive."

NYC Food Truck Lunch: 'Moc 'n Cheese' & Chunky Veggie Soup ...

(credit: New York Street Food)

(credit: New York Street Food)

Perry, the voice behind New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City food trucks.

One of the newer street vendors in NYC is The Squeeze. They started with a food truck last May, then added a cart in November. The truck has been parking in Tribeca, and the cart has been parked on Union Square West between 14-15 St.

The Squeeze sells ?raw comfort food.? Think cold pressed juices, booster shots, cleanses, and a few other healthy goodies.

On our first visit to The Squeeze, we had a vegan hot dog with kimchi topping. That was not one of our more enjoyable lunches, but we seem to have found the sweet spot on our second visit.

We ordered a ?moc ?n cheese? for $7, and since it was a cold day (to say the least), also got an order of chunky veggie soup for $5.

We started with the soup, and chunky veggie soup was not an understatement.

The portion size was small for $5, but the soup was jam-packed with veggies. The main vegetables were carrots, zucchini and cabbage, which nearly filled the cup to its brim.

The vegetable broth was tasty too. There was a very slight sweetness to the broth, and a rich vegetable flavor.

There were 3 different soups available at The Squeeze, and they all looked good. We almost got nutmeg cauliflower, but one of the guys on the bikes in the photo below heartily endorsed the chunky veggie soup, and he was right. It was excellent.

We almost got the moc ?n cheese on our first visit, and made sure to get it this time.

(credit: New York Street Food)

(credit: New York Street Food)

The macaroni was made with quinoa pasta, which didn?t taste much different to us than pasta made with flour, eggs and water. The texture was pretty similar too, albeit on the soft side.

The cheese sauce was made with raw cashew cheese, and it had a fairly strong cheesy flavor. We?re not too up on vegan food, but this dish was tasty and filling, two of the more important traits to us.

There were even some cereal flakes in the center of the dish to add some crunch.

Glad we went back for a second visit, because it was definitely more enjoyable than the first.

You can follow The Squeeze on?Twitter here, and their Facebook is here.?You can also check out the full menu on their?website here.

Don?t ignore the snore: Snoring may be early sign of future health risks

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Here's a wake-up call for snorers: Snoring may put you at a greater risk than those who are overweight, smoke or have high cholesterol to have thickening or abnormalities in the carotid artery, according to researchers at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

The increased thickening in the lining of the two large blood vessels that supply the brain with oxygenated blood is a precursor to atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries responsible for many vascular diseases.

"Snoring is more than a bedtime annoyance and it shouldn't be ignored. Patients need to seek treatment in the same way they would if they had sleep apnea, high blood pressure or other risk factors for cardiovascular disease," says lead study author Robert Deeb, M.D., with the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Henry Ford.

"Our study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that isolated snoring may not be as benign as first suspected. So instead of kicking your snoring bed partner out of the room or spending sleepless nights elbowing him or her, seek out medical treatment for the snorer."

The study reveals changes in the carotid artery with snorers -- even for those without sleep apnea -- likely due to the trauma and subsequent inflammation caused by the vibrations of snoring.

Study results will be presented January 25 at the 2013 Combined Sections Meeting of the Triological Society in Scottsdale, Ariz. It has been submitted to The Laryngoscope journal for publication.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) -- a sleep disorder that occurs due to the collapse of the airway in the throat during sleep and causes loud snoring and periodic pauses in breathing -- has long been linked to cardiovascular disease, along with a host of other serious health issues.

But the risk for cardiovascular disease may actually begin with snoring, long before it becomes OSA. Until now, there was little evidence in humans to show a similar connection between snoring and cardiovascular risk.

For the Henry Ford study, Dr. Deeb and senior study author Kathleen Yaremchuk, M.D., reviewed data for 913 patients who had been evaluated by the institution's sleep center.

Patients, ages 18-50, who had participated in a diagnostic sleep study between December 2006 and January 2012 were included in the study. None of the participants had sleep apnea.

In all, 54 patients completed the snore outcomes survey regarding their snoring habits, as well as underwent a carotid artery duplex ultrasound to measure the intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries.

Carotid intima-media thickness, a measurement of the thickness of the innermost two layers of the arterial wall, may be used to detect the presence and to track the progression of atherosclerotic disease. Intima-media thickness is the first sign of carotid artery disease.

Compared to non-snorers, snorers were found to have a significantly greater intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries, the study finds.

The study also revealed no statistically significant differences in intima-media thickness for patients with or without some of the traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease -- smoking, diabetes, hypertension or hypercholesterolemia.

"Snoring is generally regarded as a cosmetic issue by health insurance, requiring significant out-of-pocket expenses by patients. We're hoping to change that thinking so patients can get the early treatment they need, before more serious health issues arise."

The Henry Ford research team plans to conduct another long-term study on this topic, particularly to determine if there's an increased incidence of cardiovascular events in patients who snore.

Along with Drs. Deeb and Yaremchuk, Henry Ford study co-authors are Paul Judge, M.D.; Ed Peterson, Ph.D.; and Judith C. Lin, M.D.
