HTC reportedly prepping ?metal-alloy? smartphone for June launch

MADRID, April 20 (Reuters) - Real Madrid ran out 3-1 winners at home to Real Betis in La Liga on Saturday but injuries to Marcelo and Luka Modric took the sheen off a relatively straightforward victory. Mesut Ozil scored twice, and Karim Benzema netted the other, as the second-placed champions moved on to 71 points with six games left to play, 10 behind leaders Barcelona who were playing at home to Levante later on Saturday. Jose Mourinho fielded a weakened side with Wednesday's Champions League semi-final first leg at Borussia Dortmund in mind. ...

Hubble celebrates 23 years on the job with a Horsehead of a different color

NASA / ESA / AURA / STScI

The Horsehead Nebula shines in a Hubble Space Telescope image that marks this month's 23rd anniversary of the orbiting observatory's launch.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

Astronomers have come out with a Horsehead Nebula of a different color to celebrate the Hubble Space Telescope's 23rd birthday.

The iconic nebula in the constellation Orion, about 1,500 light-years away, can be seen even through small telescopes. In visible light, it's a dark dust cloud in the shape of a horse's head, silhouetted against a backdrop of glowing hydrogen gas. But the Horsehead takes on a completely different look in the new view released Friday.

"This image was taken in the infrared," Joe Liske, an astronomer from the European Southern Observatory, explains in a video introducing the picture. "In infrared light, we can pierce right through some of the bulky plumes of dusty material which usually mask and obscure the inner regions of the Horsehead. The result is this rather fragile-looking structure, made of delicate, wispy folds of gas ? very different to the nebula's appearance in the visible."

The infrared glow, captured by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3, lights up the nebula's clouds from within. Liske says it's "a fitting celebration of an incredible 23 years of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope."

The Hubble team traditionally releases an eye-popping shot to celebrate the anniversary of the space telescope's launch on April 24, 1990. As part of this year's celebration, the Hubble Heritage Project asked astronomers around the world to send in their own Horsehead Nebula photos, and you can see the collection via Flickr and Tumblr.

Like a veteran racehorse, Hubble is hitting its stride ? but that hasn't always been the case.?The first couple of years of operation were hampered by a flaw in the telescope's main mirror. Equipment to compensate for the problem was installed during a crucial series of spacewalks 20 years ago, in 1993. The shuttle Atlantis paid a final servicing visit to Hubble in 2009, and the telescope has been working just fine since then.

Hubble operations have been extended through 2016 ??and if the telescope remains in good working order, it's likely to continue being funded at least until 2018, when the $8.8 billion James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled for launch. Eventually, Hubble will have to be sent down to a fiery doom. But who knows? Maybe the old telescope will hang around to experience life after 30.

Astronomer Joe Liske of the European Southern Observatory guides you through a new view of the Horsehead Nebula in a "Hubblecast" video from the European Space Agency's Hubble team.

PFT: Hopkins, Harrison deny trashing Combine room

Wild Card Playoffs - Indianapolis Colts v Baltimore RavensGetty Images

With the NFL Draft approaching, we?re taking a team-by-team look at the needs of each club. Up next is the team with the No. 24 overall selection, the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts are short a second-rounder (from the Vontae Davis trade) and a fifth, and are picking later in the order than many expected after last year?s surprising playoff season.

Guard: It?s tempting to put tackle in the top spot, but picking where they are, it?s not a certainty they could find an upgrade to the acceptable-not-great left tackle Anthony Castonzo in the Draft. And after spending huge free agent money on right tackle Gosder Cherilus, they can?t justify taking someone there.

But they can fix the pass protection from the inside out. Signing Donald Thomas was another early move, but getting some more help up the middle might allow them to improve, even with tackles that are closer to average than great.

Running back: The Colts have gotten by with a bunch of guys in the backfield, and at some point, they?re going to have to give quarterback Andrew Luck a little more help. New offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton is willing to run, and they need a little more personnel in the backfield.

Cornerback: After acquiring Davis last year, the Colts have used the fringes of free agency to check off boxes. They signed Greg Toler during their first-day drunken-sailor act, and he?s been good when he?s been well. But he?s not so good that they can ignore this position.

Outside linebacker: After saying goodbye to Dwight Freeney, the Colts need to add a pass-rusher to complement Robert Mathis. They gave Green Bay?s Erik Walden too much money (but good for him), but need an upgrade there as well. They talked about his ability to set the edge, but they need someone to sack the quarterback.

Wide receiver: Reggie Wayne is still great, and T.Y. Hilton emerged as a playmaker. And though they signed Darrius Heyward-Bey, they need to think of the long-term here, and find someone who will take up the torch when Wayne?s no longer there.

The Colts are in an interesting spot. They have a young quarterback on a cheap rookie contract, which gives them flexibility to do so many things. And credit to general manager Ryan Grigson for knowing what he needed, and moving aggressively to fill needs in free agency so he could draft for talent.

But with a pile of salary cap room, they spent on guys who were fortunate to receive the deals they did. While they filled a lot of lines on the depth chart, not all of the guys they signed this spring are difference-makers.

Luck could prove to be the ultimate deodorant, and keep an ordinary cast of characters competitive. But if they can?t find him some consistent help up front, it?s going to be hard for him to play at a high level, when he?s spending so much time on his back.
